Spectacular dust devil breaks up baseball game in Brooklyn park (VIDEO)

A freak dust devil swirled through a popular New York City park Sunday disrupting a baseball game and sending hipster sunbathers into a frenzy.

The funnel of dirt and dust formed on the baseball field at Brooklyn's McCarren Park during the afternoon confounding the players and spectators alike.

The Greenpoint park has been dubbed the "hipster beach" by locals so there was no shortage of snarky comments or smartphones on hand to capture the rare NYC phenomenom — which lasted about a minute.

Conditions in the park on Sunday were ideal for a dust devil which, according to weather experts, typically form "on a clear day when the ground is heated by the sun, warming the air just above the ground.

"As heated air near the surface rises quickly through a small pocket of cooler air above it, the air may begin to rotate, if conditions are just right."

Dust devils are usually harmless spirals of wind, but the mini-tornadoes can on rare occasions grow large enough to pose a threat to both people and property.

Still not as threatening as the Tickle Me Elmos and Spidermans in Times Square.
