College football coach moves game to accommodate daughter's wedding: Report

Wagner College head coach Walt Hameline had a dilemma on his hands after his youngest daughter, Kelly, told him last fall that the wedding date she had her heart set on fell on a day the Staten Island football team was scheduled to play Monmouth University.

"How can you do this?" was his first reaction said Hameline. "What are you thinking about? It's football season. Ever since she was a baby she went to every football game."

Then, Hameline's proud father of the bride sensibilities took over. And, with the help of an old friend, Monmouth coach Kevin Callahan, he was able to reschedule the game.

Now Wagner will visit its old Northeast Conference rival on the Jersey Shore this Saturday, giving the Seahawks an open date on Sept. 20 — the day of the wedding.

Callahan had pencilled in Wagner for Sept. 20 on Monmouth's schedule, but was able to move the game, lock it in and build the team's remaining schedule around it.

"We had the flexibility to make it work. I was more than happy to do it," said Callahan, who has been coach at Monmouth for 22 years.

"It's her wedding present and a lot of presents to follow throughout life," Hameline said Friday.

The coach is just grateful his daughter's wedding didn't conflict with Wagner's game last week at Florida International, an FBS school. Hameline said Wagner was paid $240,000 for that trip to South Florida.

"Let's get this straight," Hameline said, "I wasn't calling FIU up."
