Free-agent first baseman Adam LaRoche will be spending a lot of his offseason looking for big bucks this winter — and not only those with dollar signs.
LaRoche tweeted a picture Wednesday of himself and a gigantic, 12-point Rocky Mountain elk he bagged this week in Wyoming.
The avid hunter posted the photo on the official Instagram account for Buck Commander, a group which LaRoche co-founded, with the caption:
“Adam LaRoche is on the board with a GIANT bull taken in the back country of WY! Congrats brother!”

Needless to say, not everyone thinks hunting is a good offseason activity including his Nationals' teammate from 2013, pitcher Dan Haren. Haren seems to think the only bucks LaRoche should be hunting are from a team's front office. He responded to LaRoche's picture on Twitter with this wry observation:

Most of Haren's tweets are in jest, so it's highly likely he's just giving LaRoche a hard time, but a lot of people might agree with the sentiments.
Although, for the record, LaRoche puts his game on the dinner table.

ReplyDeleteNot a hunter myself and would've just marveled at the majesty had I luckily happened upon the great beast in WY wilderness. But Dan takes the narrow view. Had Haren been a regular viewer of nature programming or worked in related field, he'd know that this big buck has lived a long, productive life (stomped on a few antlers, no doubt) and it's likely end-game otherwise would not've be pretty. If not disease, a challenger would've displaced him as he lived out his final days beaten, alone and maybe in pain. Adam's kill may've been best for this proud creature.
Try the broader view next time, Dan. It's not a "marshmallow world."

Not A "buck". That would be a deer. This is a Rocky Mountain "bull" Elk. A very nice "six" point. (Actually 6x7), with large G3 antler spikes on both sides. Nice animal; any hunter would be proud of that one.
